Its unique front surface has a continuous curvature variation, specially designed to increase reading areas and obtain better optical quality.
A progressive lens incorporates multiple powers; it therefore has many ideal base curves, increasing in power from top to bottom. The power of the far zone requires a flatter base, while the power of the near zone requires a more curved base. When a freeform progressive lens is processed from a "traditional" patella, the various powers must share a single base curve, which is usually not ideal for the power/near zone...
