World Optometry Day: The importance of regular appointments
The word "optometry" derives from two Greek roots: "opto", which comes from "opsis", meaning "sight" or "vision", and "metria", from "metron", meaning "measure". Thus, etymologically, "optometry" refers to "the measure of sight" or "the measure of sight".
Optometry is part of what is known as primary eye care and is practised by professionals who are classified as senior diagnostic and therapeutic technicians. It focuses on assessing visual acuity and prescribing optical compensations, such as glasses and/or contact lenses, as well as the possible diagnosis of some eye conditions and the necessary referral to an ophthalmologist.
Following World Optometry Day, we emphasise the importance of regular consultations with qualified health professionals. An annual assessment can identify any visual difficulties before they become more serious problems, ensuring proper monitoring and maintaining good eye health. The use of correction if necessary is also essential to ensure good visual health.
